G073 unique 1858 Gold Lifesaving Medal steamer frigate

G073 Unique 1858 Gold Lifesaving Medal steamer frigate Susquehanna PCGS SP62. 77mm, 212.2 grams. This medal was Hand-Engraved by Tiffany & Co in .900+ fine gold and Presented from the Susquehanna Crew to Dr. Frederick. Dr. Frederick Henry Rose (January 5,1833 to March 31,1873) was an assistant surgeon in the Royal Navy stationed in Jamaica in early 1858 when the United States side-wheel steamer frigate U.S.S. Susquehanna pulled into the harbor at Port Royal, crippled by an outbreak of yellow fever that ravaged its crew. Dr. Rose gallantly volunteered to board the ship and care for the sicks, which he did until the U.S.S. Susquehanna arrived for quarantine in New York on April 15, 1858. By that time the crew had experienced 155 cases of yellow fever, including 17 deaths. This medal is an extraordinary historical monument, a unique medal, of the highest interest to collectors of the finest American historical medals or anyone with an enthusiasm for medical or naval history. It is easy to find Tiffany silverware or jewelry, but it is hard to find a Tiffany gold medal with such historic value. US shipping is free. International shipping is 128 FedEx.
